22 August – Earth overshooy day

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that year. Until the end of 2020, mankind will consume food, wood, energy and space that the Earth will not be able to regenerate…in Italy we have been doing this since last May 15!

Dialogue between the Planet and the Coronavirus:
"Thanks for the break!"
"Do you think they understood?"

Globally, compared to 2019, the date has been postponed by three weeks, not because we have become more responsible, but simply because Covid has forced us to slow down our activities, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions and a decrease in the harvesting of forest material.

In spite of the “pause-covid” the health of the Earth and human coexistence remains worrying: not only has the lockdown had a negligible impact on overheating, the ardent mobilization of the “Generation Greta’ on the effects of climate change has…died out: the post-lockdown “restart” stubbornly puts the economic recovery at the center of general concerns…while inequalities worsen month by month: more wealth for the rich and more poverty for the poor!

NEITHER THE SOLICITATIONS OF CLIMATE SCIENTISTS NOR THE INDIGNATION OF GRETA THUNBERG OF THE MILLIONS OF YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE FRIDAYS FOR THE FUTURE HAVE MANAGED TO SHAKE THE WORLD TO TAKE THE PATH OF “AN UNPRECEDENTED AND CREATIVE COMMITMENT” TO “LEARN ABOUT AND GUIDE THE IMPRESSIVE NEW DYNAMICS” OF THE GLOBALIZED WORLD.

IS TAKING CARE OF IT POPE FRANCIS WITH HIS LAUDATO SII

RELAUNCHING WITH ARDENT PASSION THAT NEED FOR AN UNPRECEDENTED AND CREATIVE COMMITMENT” EXPRESSED BY POPE BENEDICT XVII IN THE 2009 ENCYCLICAL CARITAS IN VERITATE.

PAPA FRANCESCO’s appeal is CONCERNED:

“We do not yet have the necessary culture to face this crisis and there is a need to build leadership that points the way” to respond to the needs of the Earth and present generations without compromising future generations.

The Congregation is also committed to doing its part: its Position on Integral Ecology is fully in tune with that of Pope Francis who calls all the inhabitants of the Earth to feel that they are citizens of the same political space and the ruling classes throughout the world to take on responsibilities unknown to other times.

Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible. And suddenly you’ll be caught doing the impossible.

TODAY WE ARE ALL CALLED UPON TO PUT INTO PRACTICE ACTIONS OF DAILY CO-RESPONSIBILITY
