Complicated birthday for the European Union:

unity in diversity is an uphill path

Europe Day celebrates  peace and unity in Europe. The date is the anniversary of the historic Schuman Declaration : in 1950, European nations were still trying to recover from the devastating consequences of the Second World War, which had ended five years earlier. It was thought that pooling economic interests would help raise living standards and be the first step towards a more united Europe.

BUT TIME HAS SHOWN THAT ECONOMIC INTERESTS
ARE DIVISIVE AND DO NOT NECESSARILY LEAD TO
RESPECT BETWEEN NATIONS.

WE SHARE URSULA VON DER LAYER'S INDIGNATION
AT A EUROPE THAT IS STILL 'MASCULINE'.
