The children who arrive at the last stage before the French border never cry. They are exhausted, they sleep all the time, some have their feet bitten by rats in the makeshift camps in Bosnia, and yet they do not cry. This is what the operators and volunteers of the ‘Fraternità Massi’ shelter for immigrants in the Salesian house next to Oulx station tell us with emotion”.

It is reminiscent of the game in the film “Life is beautiful“, the one these children experience with their parents as they walk along the route of what the experts call “‘Italian route’ or ‘terminal of the Mediterranean route’ and also ‘western limit of the Balkan route'”.

The luckiest ones find a place to stay at the shelter set up by the ‘Talità Kum’ foundation with the Rainbow 4 Africa doctors, open 24 hours a day in Oulx in the Upper Susa Valley. Here “they can be visited and spend a warm night after 4 p.m., when in winter darkness falls and the temperature drops below zero” and find food and boots suitable for the crossing in the snow.

This photo of 2018 is the photo that testifies to our habit of horror and the prevalence of widespread irresponsibility…other than models of widespread reception!

Munch’s work, “The Scream” of 1910, which anticipated the pain of an Earth that would be devastated by man, also expresses the hardening of hearts in the face of the pain of our brothers and sisters.

Let us make our own the prayer of Father Davide Maria Turoldo, who recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of his “birth to heaven”, remembered for his dedication to the poor and excluded.

WE HAVE NO OTHER WAY

We have no other way, men
way to save ourselves than to become
consciousness of what we are,

and confess it to each other
and shout it to the four winds
before the universe,

with decision and humility
trusting in the pity
of all creatures,

and at the same time believing that this
our disastrous nothingness
commits God himself

to intervene...
