Close to the people and Sisters in Lebanon and Syria involved in the conflict between Israel and Palestine

“The suffering and violence taking place in the Middle East, ” says Sister Hanan, “is beyond imagination.

The ‘third world war in bits and pieces’ also passes through the places where our sisters are working. Lebanon, in particular, is experiencing yet another dramatic moment just a few years after the devastating explosion at the port of Beirut in August 2020.

Today, again, the sisters are forced to face a crisis of exceptional magnitude as the conflict between Israel and Palestine impacts on the possibility of accomplishing the mission in many locations.

The situation in Gaza is getting worse and worse and ‘the real concern is that Israel’s planned Rafah invasion war could act as a catalyst for an uncontrollable inferno in the region. Tens of thousands have already fled across both sides of the border between Israel and Lebanon as violence continues to escalate between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. Having lost everything, many of those fleeing their homes arrive in Beirut where, as Sr Hanan says, they ‘arrive with nothing’.
